DOHA: The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) functioning under the World Health Organisation (WHO) has released the ‘Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, Volume X’ (CI5-X) report which for the first time includes cancer data from Qatar.

Qatar is one of the few countries in the region to have cancer data accepted by the WHO, the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) said yesterday. The report includes data about incidence of various types of cancer in Qatar from 2003 to 2007. The total number of cancer cases in the Qatari population during the period has been put at 895. Those affected included 477 women and 418 men. The SCH said yesterday that Qatar’s inclusion in this significant publication indicated the high quality data collection, and the considerable attention given to provide accurate and comprehensive data. SCH lauded the commitment and hard work of the cancer registry team based at Hamad Medical Corporation.

This report is released every five years and compiles the latest global cancer incidence rates by cancer site and geographical distribution. It includes data from 290 cancer registries worldwide.

The publication allows health organisations around the world to understand and monitor the burden of cancer locally, regionally and globally.

Qatar recently joined the IARC-WHO to be the first GCC state to join the agency. Qatar is the 24th member of the agency established in 1965.
