Paris: Qatar has won the membership of the Unesco’s Legal Committee, Headquarters Committee and Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport.
This came during election of the committees during the 37th session of the Unesco general conference in Paris, which ends on November 20.
Unesco’s 195 member states took part in the elections and the Arab group unanimously supported Qatar’s nomination for the committees.
The panels convene periodically at the Unesco headquarters to study international issues on its agenda and prepare resolutions.
The Legal Committee includes Egypt, Palestine, Sudan (Arab Group), France, Germany, Italy and the US (Europe and North America), the Czech Republic, the Russian Federation and Uzbekistan (Group of Eastern European countries) and Gabon and Kenya (Commission of the African continent).
The Headquarters Committee includes Sudan, Senegal, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Korea, Bangladesh, Spain and Portugal. The Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport includes Yemen, South Africa, Congo, Iran, Indonesia, Brazil, the Russian Federation, Germany and Denmark.
Membership in these committees is for four years, and elections are held every two years to replace half of their members.
