6 soldiers killed, one missing in Siachen

Srinagar: Six soldiers were killed and one was missing after their post was buried under an avalanche in Siachen Glacier area of Ladakh region yesterday, army officials said here. “In a tragic incident, six jawans were killed and one jawan of 1 Assam Regiment is missing when they were buried under an avalanche in sub-sector Hanif, Turtuk area of the Siachen Glacier in Jammu and Kashmir today,” Lt Col J S Brar, spokesman of army’s Srinagar based 15 Corps, said. “At 6.15 am today our posts at a height of over 17,000 feet came under an avalanche. Immediately avalanche rescue teams along with avalanche rescue dogs were pressed into rescue operation.“Six jawans have unfortunately lost their lives. Their mortal remains have been recovered. One jawan is still missing. Unfortunately, the rescue had to be halted due to adverse weather conditions,” the spokesman said.

 

Explosives seized in Jharkhand, three arrested

 

Ranchi: A huge quantity of explosives was seized from a car and three people arrested in Jharkhand’s Sahebganj district yesterday, police said. Police stopped a Santro car near Maharajpur, 500km from here and recovered 1,600 pieces of detonators and gelatin sticks. All the three people travelling in the car were taken into custody. The explosives are used to blast hills in the mining areas. The arrested people are being interrogated by police. Jharkhand is infested with Maoist insurgents, who also use such explosives to target security personnel and their vehicles.

 

8 killed as bus falls into gorge in Jammu 

Jammu: At least eight people were killed when a minibus in which they were travelling skidded off a road and fell into a gorge near Bhaderwah, about 200km north-east of Jammu, last evening. Police said the minibus was on its way from Bhaderwah to Doda. One of the passengers was critically injured and was admitted to Bhaderwah hospital.Agencies
