DOHA: The rains that lashed the country yesterday are likely to continue until the early hours of today. However, no further rains are expected in the remaining part of the day and tomorrow, the National Day, according to the Meteorology Department.
All parts of the country received light to moderate rains yesterday, causing a sudden dip in temperature, marking the beginning of winter. The showers accompanied by strong northwesterly winds are described an extension of the Siberian High, that brought the Gulf region under the impact of a “deep low pressure on the upper air.”
“We are expecting the rains to continue until 6am tomorrow (Monday). There are no chances of rains on the National Day,” a forecaster at the department told this daily last evening.
Temperature in most parts of the country fell up to 15 degrees Celsius last night and it could plummet further reaching 14 degrees in the wee hours of today, he added.
However, slight rise in temperature is expected tomorrow, probably settling at 15/17 degrees Celsius at the minimum and 23/25 degrees at the maximum.
The northern parts of the country, especially Al Shamal, Al Khor and Ruwais received the highest rains yesterday, said the forecaster, adding that data about the rainfall were not readily available.
A cloudy and windy weather prevailed over the country since early morning, bringing in the first cold spell of the season. Most parts of the country received light rains since morning, gathering momentum in the latter parts of day.
Motorists had a hard time negotiating through the water-logged streets and roundabouts as the showers flooded many low-lying areas by evening.
Although the rains could stop this morning, the strong northwesterly winds would continue today and tomorrow. The winds are expected to blow art speeds ranging from 05 to 15 knots inshore and 15 to 25 knots offshore today. Temperature in Doha would hover between 16 to 21 degrees Celsius.
