DOHA: Qatar Amateur Radio Society (QARS) yesterday launched a special broadcast on the National Day, which could be listened by broadcasters in other countries.
The broadcast was launched at the Corniche in the presence of the Chairman of Administrative Control and Transparency Authority and President of Qatar Amateur Radio Society, H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah.
Amateur radio operators in other countries would be listening to programmes on air on signal A71QND until Wednesday. About 1,000 such operators could listen to the programmes daily.
QARS will have five amateur radio stations with antennas on the Corniche to transmit National Day events internationally.
“Our society is very active and we are taking the opportunity to participate in the National Day celebrations. We are proud to introduce our society to the international community,” said Al Attiyah.
The broadcasters have the facility to choose and talk to their colleagues in other countries. For instance, they can turn beam to Russia if they wish to talk to listeners in Moscow.
QARS has invited experts and amateur radio associations from Kuwait, Bahrain, Tunisia, Denmark, India, the US and other countries. “Language is not a barrier to us; we can talk to listeners who speak any language. We use an international language — Qcode — to communicate with our colleagues who can’t understand English,” said D Bharathi, Chief Coordinator, National Institute of Amateur Radio in New Delhi.
“We have communicated with around 260 amateur radio operators within few hours today,” she said. Experts also held a workshop on starting an amateur radio as a hobby. It taught participants how to develop communication skills by utilising the information technology. A lecture will be held today for Qatar University students. The broadcast and other events are being held with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage in collaboration with the organising committee for National Day celebrations.
