DOHA: Arab Human Rights Day activities began yesterday in Doha with a large participation of expatriate communities.
Leaders of Arab and non-Arab expatriate communities were honoured and presented with mementos by the Minister of State for Interior Affairs H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.
The three-day event is held under the theme ‘Dialogue and tolerance to promote and protect human rights,’ is organised by the Human Rights Department of the Ministry of Interior at the Crowne Plaza hotel.
“Anniversary of Arab Human Rights Day is organised under the slogan Dialogue and tolerance to promote and protect human rights to honour the leaders and representatives of the expatriate communities in Qatar,” said Colonel Abdulla Saqr Al Muhandi, Director of Human Rights Department of Ministry of Interior.
He also pointed that the participation of expatriates shows the level of the state’s interest in human rights and ministry’s keenness on strengthening respect for human rights and to provide the necessary safeguards on the political, economic, social and cultural levels.
Community leaders appreciated the initiative by Ministry of Interior and stressed that this honour shows the leadership role played by Qatar with all its authorities and ministries in supporting human rights. They also said that there is great cooperation between the ministry and its various departments and officials and the Arab and non-Arab expatriate communities.
General Secretary of International Union of Muslim Scholars Dr Ali Quradaghi presented a lecture on ‘Dialogue and values of tolerance in Islam,’ in which he said that the foundation of dialogue and tolerance deep routed in Islamic belief and principles and the salute of Islam itself is Salam that means peace.
A seminar will be held today for the female staff of the ministry under the theme developing culture of dialogue is respect for human rights. A scholarly forum will be held tomorrow on dialogue and tolerance for supporting security and social safety, at the main auditorium of the Criminal Investigation Department. The program is held in collaboration with Human Rights Department and Law College of Qatar University.
