A lecture in progress at Al Kaaban centre of the Primary Health Care Corporation, marking World Haemophilia Day yesterday.

DOHA: Al Kaaban, one of the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) centres, celebrated World Haemophilia Day.

This day is marked on April 17 every year by the World Federation of Haemophilia. It was observed with a lecture by Dr Seif El Sheikh, PHCC’s dentist.

Participants, including nurses, doctors, pharmacists and technicians, learnt signs, symptoms and risks of being a haemophiliac.

Dr El Sheikh explained that haemophilia is a rare bleeding disorder in which the blood doesn’t clot normally, and it is inherited, which means it is passed from parents to children through genes.

“Today is World Haemophilia Day, and it is a good opportunity to celebrate it with a lecture, awareness and making the staff aware of the symptoms, signs and treatment of this disorder.

“This lecture will be a great asset to the staff for identifying the disorder in the patient,” said the doctor.

He further explained that “the symptoms of this disorder are excessive bleeding and easy bruising. Bleeding can occur on the body’s surface and the signs could be nosebleeds for no obvious reason, heavy bleeding from a minor cut or bleeding from a cut that resumes after stopping for a short time.”

Dr El Sheikh highlighted that haemophilia is not only about external bleeding, it can happen inside the body as well.

“Some of the signs are blood in the urine (from the kidneys or bladder), stool (from the intestines or stomach), or large bruises (from the muscles of the body)”, he concluded.
