RAWALPINDI: In Pakistan, 480 people develop eye disorders every day and this worrisome increase in eye diseases has now reached to the proportions of epidemic raising new challenges, said Lieutenant General Hamid Javaid, president of the Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospitals at a seminar here yesterday.
He said that around 14,000 people are exposed to eye diseases every month, which means that a person is catching disease every three minutes, which is distressing the whole society.

KARACHI: A juvenile whale shark, which got trapped in a net near Sonmiani Bay in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan, has been successfully released by fishermen.
World Wide Fund of Nature (WWF) officials said yesterday that the 3.5-metre-long whale shark got entangled in the gillnet during tuna fishing near Sapat area, part of Sonmiani Bay, two days ago.
Eight varsities lose status
ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) yesterday cancelled the degree-awarding status of eight universities after they failed to meet standards.
According to the HEC, the eight institutions are: My University (Islamabad), Darul Madina International University (Islamabad), South Asian Strategic Institute University (Islamabad), Capital University (Islamabad), the Pakistan Institute of Management (Karachi), Habib University Foundation (Karachi), Nazeer Hussain University (Karachi) and Lal Shahbaz University (Karachi).
