Mogadishu: Somali authorities announced on Monday the killing of 100 militants in a military operation by the Somali army in the south of the country.
The Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported that the Danab forces of the National Army, in cooperation with international partners, carried out a military operation against militants in the Awdhegle district of Lower Shabelle region, killing 100 militants and destroying trenches and shelters where they were hiding.
For nearly two decades, Somali government forces have been fighting armed movements, most notably the Al Shabaab movement, which is linked to Al Qaeda.
Al Shabaab has carried out numerous attacks that have killed hundreds of civilians and security personnel. Its repeated attacks also target government facilities and hotels in the capital, Mogadishu.
