Doha: The Gulf Studies Centre, part of the College of Arts and Sciences at Qatar University (QU), will hold the 7th Annual International Interdisciplinary Conference “FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: Looking into Global and Local Perspectives,” on September 19 and 20.
The international conference will discuss Qatar’s experience in the organisation of the upcoming World Cup. The event will be open to the public.
The conference is to add a country-specific focus to the current more general debate and multidisciplinary studies about the phenomenon of football in Middle Eastern societies, and the Gulf region in particular.
As opposed to most events discussing the World Cup, it will not be limited to the focus on technical/organisational dimensions or sports diplomacy only. The priority of the conference is to trigger comprehensive debates on the different social, political, economic and cultural aspects of the World Cup and its impacts on the hosting country, the Gulf region, Middle East and North Africa region and the world.
The conference will discuss the history of Qatar’s decision to host the World Cup and will cover the multifaceted domestic challenges of hosting the event and how they were overcome.
Professor Mahjoob Zweiri, Director of the Gulf Studies Centre notes that the conference, “is an academic platform to discuss all matters related to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and the aim is to publish an edited volume that can be beneficial to the future generation”.
