MANILA: A passenger bus travelling on the south-bound lane of EDSA caught fire yesterday morning as it approached Cubao, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.
According to the MMDA’s Metrobase, the Commuter bus (TXl-836) was traversing EDSA at about 9:40am when it caught fire.
Immediately, the driver, identified as Florentino Corpuz, guided his 21 passengers out of the bus to safety.
No was hurt in the fire, the MMDA said.
The burning bus caused traffic to build up along EDSA as firefighters and rescuers from the MMDA rushed to the scene.
Rebels cut rubber trees
MANILA: Communist rebels in Surigao del Sur recently destroyed newly-planted rubber trees due to the refusal of farmers to yield to the insurgents’ extortion demands, the military said yesterday.
Cpt Alberto Caber, spokesman of the Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command, said about 15 rebels uprooted around 7,000 seedlings owned by the Bacolod Upland Farmers Association last Monday.
The incident reportedly transpired at a rubber nursery in Sitio Cagburao, Barangay Bacolod in Cagwait town.
“The farmers and residents were mad at the attack of their source of living and requested responding troops to assist them in filing appropriate charges against the NPA (New People’s Army),” Caber said in a statement.
Overloaded trucks ban plea
