A flooded street in Doha after rains yesterday.
DOHA: The wet and cloudy weather is likely to continue in Qatar until Friday with the sun occasionally playing hide and seek, the weather bureau said yesterday.
Occasional thunderstorms, scattered rains and strong winds are forecast at places across the country today.
The bureau has categorically ruled out any possibility of a Riyadh-like downpour and flooding here.
Rains will vary in intensity from place to place.
“The northern areas would likely witness more rains than other areas, including Doha,” a senior official from the Meteorology Department told this newspaper.
The official said people should not lend ears to rumours about torrential rains and flooding in Qatar, being spread through the social media.
“They are saying the American Base has made those forecasts as though it were a competent agency to issue weather forecasts. I heard similar rumours a month ago.”
Unstable weather conditions are prevailing all over the GCC region, with Riyadh and the eastern and northern areas of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE and Kuwait witnessing heavy rains.
About Oman, the official said only some parts and not the entire country, were witnessing such weather conditions.
A heavy two-hour downpour led to water-logging in several areas in Saudi Arabia and the worst affected was Riyadh where several arterial roads were closed for traffic and people were left trapped in their cars.
The eastern parts of the kingdom bordering Qatar and Bahrain were also affected. Educational institutions in these areas will remain closed today, reports said.
Meanwhile, the night today is expected to be colder in Qatar with the mercury dropping to between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius at places.
In Doha, the minimum temperature forecast is 19 degrees C, while in Abu Samra, it would be 17.
Day temperatures today would vary from 23 degrees C in Al Khor and 24 in Al Ruwais in the north to 27 in Dukhan.
In Doha, the maximum temperature forecast is 25 degrees C.
