DOHA: A group of skydivers will fly a large Qatari flag 6,000-feet high in the sky in the morning and will jump off from a plane with the help of parachutes during National Day celebrations at the Corniche today.
The parachutes will land near the pavilion where dignitaries will be seated. The 12-member group of skydivers from Lekhwiya’s rescue team will carry the 15-metre length and 10-metre wide Qatari flag, Al Sharq reported yesterday.
“After parachuting with the flag, the skydivers will make formations in the sky,” said Sergeant Haneez Al Meraikhi. They will make formations of diamonds and throw smoke bombs, producing designs.
The Qatari military will parade tanks, rocket launchers would roll along the Doha seafront and fighter jets will fly overhead between 8am and 10am at the Corniche today. The parade will showcase Qatar’s strength and determination towards its national security and its defence transformation during the past years.
People who plan to visit the Corniche for the celebrations are required by the organising committee to be present before 7am. Special transport and shuttle bus services too have been organised.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior on its Facebook page has requested the public to respect law and rules with good behaviour during the celebrations. “Please cooperate with Police and Security Personnel to ensure that people can enjoy safely the celebrations of National Day,” it further said.
Powder fireworks will follow the parade at the Corniche. Being introduced for the first time into the National Day celebrations, powder fireworks will take place between 11am and 4pm, one display of 10 seconds every hour. An artistic firework will be displayed for 10 minutes starting at 8pm at the Corniche, accompanied with traditional music.
Many other activities will be held at the Corniche to mark the celebrations. Two different kinds of Qatari traditional boats will be showcased at the Dhow exhibition. A classic car exhibition, palm trees illumination, activities for children, which are being held for the past five days, will conclude today. A Pearl illumination will be displayed at Palm Island.
