DOHA: Ooredoo has reached a milestone with over 200,000 customers in Qatar connected to its fibre network.
The achievement was reached on December 13, another important step towards Qatar’s progress in becoming one of the best-connected nations in the world, the company said in a statement.
The company’s achievement in providing Ooredoo Fibre, combined with the recent launch of 4G Plus (Advanced LTE) means that customers can stay connected to the fastest-available Internet at home and while moving across the country.
The achievement is remarkable given that Ooredoo has managed to accelerate the pace of people being connected to fibre in 2014. Around 9,000 homes a month are being linked to Ooredoo Fibre, supporting the spread of the knowledge-based economy.
“As our community prepares to celebrate National Day, I am proud that Ooredoo has lived up to its promise to connect people to the fastest-available Fibre network.
“The people of Qatar deserve the best, which is why we have built this bigger, faster, better network and rolled it out across the country,” said Sheikh Saud bin Nasser Al Thani, CEO, Ooredoo Qatar.
Ooredoo Fibre is popular particularly because of the company’s capacity to deliver free and permanent speed upgrades. Earlier in the year, all one Mbps plan customers enjoyed a 10-time speed increase to 10Mbps, while 10Mbps customers were boosted to 25Mbps, with no additional charges.
To enable more people to keep track of Qatar’s ‘Fibre revolution’, Ooredoo has a real-time online fibre availability map for customers to track the roll-out progress of the network. The map is live on Ooredoo’s website and allows customers to find out whether they qualify to upgrade their service by checking if they are in a fibre-ready ‘Green’ area.
Ooredoo’s investment in Fibre will continue throughout 2015. It also plans a sizeable infrastructure investment and capacity-building programme in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup 2022.
