A new law is being framed to ensure protection of the rights of senior citizens and reformation of the old-age ‘homes’ in Punjab, province of Pakistan declaring neglect of these persons a crime for the first time in the history of the country.
The first-ever law in Pakistan is being framed by Chief Minister’s Special Monitoring Unit (Law and Order), headed by Salman Sufi. It is likely to be passed by the Punjab Assembly in February next upon the completion of all legal formalities.
It will confer rights on, and provide a protection system for, the senior citizens of Punjab. The aim is to address their issues by establishing a framework and creating an enabling environment for their empowerment and protection, promoting and maintaining their dignity, independence, being, and security.
