DOHA: The Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) that gives support to the Traffic Department and other law enforcing sections recorded a total of 341,170 traffic violations on its own during last year, a senior official has disclosed.
Majority of the violations involved in stunt driving and overtaking from right, Brig Ali Salman Al Mohannadi, commander of parades and patrols at Lekhwiya, told an Arabic daily.
The violating cars could face impounding and if it is for one day the procedures are simple. However, if a car is impounded for more than a day it will be followed by other legal procedures, said the official.
He said stunt driving on the roads has reduced after the authorities allotted a special area in Industrial Area for car sports, under monitoring by the Traffic Department and the Civil Defence department.
Lekhwiya also sends its patrols to animal farms and protected areas to curb environmental violations. During 2014, it recorded 304 violations of the environment law committed by motorists driving in such areas. Inspectors of the Ministry of Environment would register the violations and forward them to Lekhwiya, said Al Mohannadi.
Most of such violations were detected in tourist spots like Sealine and Al Udaid during weekends and holidays.
Lekhwiya works in collaboration with the electronic control room at Ashghal to monitor traffic congestions in the city.
During conferences, a traffic plan is prepared taking into account different factors like the timing of schools and offices. The conference schedule is prepared accordingly, said Al Mohannadi.
Movement of the official delegations during conferences will also be streamlined based on traffic data received from the Ashghal control room to minimize traffic disruptions. Lekhwiya has also joined the ongoing campaign against abandoned cars and removed a total of 2085 vehicles during 2014.
