Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Municipality significantly expanded protected agriculture in 2025 by supporting the conversion of 654,000 square metres of open farmland into protected farms and distributing 1,864 insect-proof net houses to farmers.

The initiatives are aimed at increasing agricultural productivity, strengthening food security, and promoting sustainable farming practices across the country.

The Agricultural Affairs Department recorded significant achievements last year, expanding protected agriculture, promoting organic farming, supporting local farmers, and enhancing digital services as part of Qatar’s efforts to strengthen food security and sustainable agricultural development.

According to the Ministry’s 2025 Annual Report, the department continued its programme to modernise agricultural production through protected farming technologies.

During the year, 654 donums of open farmland were converted into protected farms, equivalent to 654,000 square metres.

In addition, the Ministry distributed 1,864 insect-proof net houses to farms across the country, helping farmers improve crop protection and productivity.

The report also highlighted the expansion of organic agriculture, with the total area under organic cultivation reaching 813 donums, equivalent to 813,000 square metres, reflecting the ministry’s commitment to environmentally sustainable farming practices and the production of high-quality agricultural products.

To support farmers and agricultural production, the Agricultural Services Centers supplied a wide range of agricultural inputs during 2025.

The centers distributed 203,600 bags of seeds, 21,421 agricultural tools and supplies, 10,176 units of fertilizers, and 9,780 seedlings, ensuring farmers had access to essential resources throughout the growing season.

On the digital services front, the Agricultural Affairs Department processed a substantial number of transactions through its electronic platforms. Under the agricultural licensing system, the department handled 83,145 applications, of which 82,151 were completed, while 994 remained under review and 271 applications were closed. The system also recorded 5,679 linked transactions.

The agricultural permits system likewise witnessed extensive activity during the year.

The department received 63,936 permit applications, completed 63,379 transactions, issued 25,537 permits, and recorded 6,280 permit-related transactions.

Overall, the system processed 576,829 permit transactions, demonstrating the growing efficiency and utilisation of the ministry’s digital agricultural services.

The report also noted that the ministry continued implementing its agriculture and food security strategies by enhancing local agricultural production, improving the efficiency and productivity of national farms, and expanding agricultural extension and development initiatives.

These achievements underscore the Agricultural Affairs Department’s continued efforts to enhance agricultural sustainability, increase local food production, support farmers with modern technologies and services, and contribute to Qatar’s long-term food security objectives.

Through the expansion of protected and organic farming and the digitisation of services, the Ministry continues to strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of the country’s agricultural sector.
