Islamabad: Pakistan and Turkey have signed 13 agreements to enhance cooperation in different fields. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the signing ceremony in Ankara, Radio Pakistan said yesterday. Deals covered power, investment, education, culture, aviation, housing, security, agriculture, communication, avoidance of double taxation and training.
55 rebels killed
in Afghanistan
Kabul: Fifty-five Taliban militants were killed and 37 wounded in joint military operations in the past 24 hours, the Interior Ministry said yesterday. “Afghan National Police, army, National Directorate for Security and coalition forces conducted operations in Balkh, Badakhshan, Kunar, Nangarhar, Zabul, Uruzgan, Logar, Paktiya, Helmand, Kapisa and Herat provinces. Eighteen rebels were arrested, the ministry added.
Terror deaths reach 1,600
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan was hit by the worst wave of terrorism in the past 20 months with more than 1,600 people killed and over 5,600 hurt in about 2,100 attacks, the Interior Ministry told the National Assembly. The toll was the highest in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Lower and Upper Dir districts, where more than 300 people died, including a two-star military general, Sanaullah Khan Niazi killed in a mine blast last week. In 2009, 3,100 people were killed and 8,000 hurt.
Militants attack Afghan village
Kabul: Afghan Taliban militants attacked the Nawabad village in northern Faryab province and torched dozens of houses and killed livestock. Officials said security forces rushed to the village and rebels fled after two-hour gunfight. Villagers claimed six people, including two children, were killed and 400 families were forced to flee.
