DOHA: Qatar is working on a law to set up an Authority that would regulate the country’s plans for the ‘peaceful use of atomic energy’.
Addressing the 57th annual session of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Dr Ahmed Hassan Al Hammadi, Director of the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Qatar would use the nuclear energy technology to harness various sectors including agriculture, water, industry, energy and health.
Qatar is in the process of training professionals to run the proposed National Authority that would regulate country’s plans to utilise the potential of nuclear energy. Qatar appreciates IAEA’s cooperation to extend its technological support to the country. “We expect the agency to further extend this co-operation in our future plans to several sectors”, he said.
Dr Ahmed called on the international community to support efforts of the regional countries to achieve the goal of making the Middle East as a ‘nuclear free-zone and other weapons of mass destruction. He urged the countries in the region to strengthen security measures and nuclear safety in order to maintain the safety and security of nuclear installations.
Qatar stressed the role being played by the IAEA in nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful use of atomic energy and congratulated the agency for its continued support in facilitating the peaceful applications of atomic energy.
Dr Ahmed presented Qatar’s candidacy for membership of the Board of Governors of the IAEA in the elections that will take place during the ongoing conference. He said Qatar will do its best to promote lasting global peace and security.
