Doha: Over three hundred schoolchildren from the GCC and Mena region are expected to participate in the 2012 World Robot Olympiad (WRO)–Arabia tomorrow at the Aspire Dome.

The international competition is hosted by the College of the North Atlantic Qatar and Maersk Oil Qatar, and will include teams from Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Lebanon, Egypt and Algeria who will compete against each other to be the best in the Arab world. It is only the second time the WRO-Arabia competition has been held, and marks the first time in Qatar.

Building on the success of the recent Qatar National Robot Olympiad, the event is aimed at encouraging broader participation from across the region, promoting interest in technology and engineering amongst young people and highlighting the dynamism of Qatar and its students at an international level.

The WRO-Arabia follows a similar format to the recent Qatar National Robot Olympiad 2012 where students from Elementary through to High School ages compete against each other in Regular and Open Categories.

The Regular Category will see students assemble and program Lego Mindstorms robots to solve a set challenge on a playing surface, while in the Open Category, students will display a project they have developed to fit the theme of ‘Robots Connecting People’.

The event is open to the public who will be able to cheer on the robot action on the Regular category game tables, or get up close and personal with the interesting inventions from the Open category.

The Olympiad is the result of a partnership between CNA-Q and Maersk Oil Qatar to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics to students in Qatar.
