New York: Qatar renewed its commitment to continue efforts to strengthen the role of women incorporated in Qatar National Vision 2030, which deals with issues related to empowering women to enable them to take part in all aspects of public life, especially in the decision-making process, in addition to increasing their access to professional support.

This came in a speech yesterday by Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Thani, Third Secretary at Qatar’s Permanent Mission to the UN, before the 68th General Assembly’s second committee meeting on ‘Eradication of poverty and other development issues’.

Referring to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s report on women’s role in development, in which he affirmed that decent work and social protection were key to achieving gender equality, women’s empowerment, growth and development on a comprehensive, equitable and sustainable basis, Sheikh Ahmed said Qatar has made significant progress with regard to improving the situation of women and their participation in public life by improving their literacy levels and school enrolment.

He said the gap between males and females has been eliminated and that Qatari women are on track to contribute to economic activities.

He said that despite legislations that protect Qatari women against discrimination and increase their participation in public life and educational achievements, Qatar will continue to support the role of women in developmental through legislations to promote their status in society.

Qatar is also committed to exerting every effort to upgrade women’s skills as they are a key pillar of human development in the country, he added.

Sheikh Ahmed said Qatar welcomes the UN secretary general’s report in which the Second UN Decade for the Eradication of Poverty focused on full employment and decent work for all as an important platform for national action and international cooperation in order that the eradication of poverty remains within post-2015 development plan.

He said it is important to give the creation of productive and decent jobs top priority, particularly for young people, and implement policies to improve agricultural productivity, livelihoods, food security and nutrition in poor rural communities.
