Cairo: Alexandria was ranked the safest African city for 2025, claiming the top spot in Numbeo’s Safety Index for Africa.
With an overall score of 54.6, Egypt’s coastal city claimed the “safest African city” distinction, beating Tunisia’s capital Tunis, and Egypt's own capital Cairo.

The regional trend continued with the Moroccan city Casablanca claiming the fourth spot with a score of 44.8, giving North Africa a clean sweep of the top four positions.
Kenya’s Nairobi, Namibia’s Windhoek, and Nigeria’s Lagos occupied fifth, sixth, and seventh positions respectively.
The remaining 5 entries were entirely South Africa's, with Cape Town, then Port Elizabeth, Durban, Johannesburg, and finally Pretoria taking 8th to 12th rankings.
The rankings highlighted a strong performance from the North African region in the safety index department, which coincidentally is Africa’s most touristic region with Egypt and Morocco being the African countries with the highest international tourism receipts post-covid as per UN data.
