DOHA: The Department of Traffic is expected to soon announce a final deadline for replacing old number plates of vehicles with the new ones that have been made mandatory.

After the final deadline has lapsed, it will be treated as a violation of rules if a vehicle’s number plate is not replaced, the department has said.

Actually, the decision for all automobiles to have new number plates was announced in November 2011 and a year’s time was allowed. The deadline was extended after it lapsed late last year and a final date is to be announced soon, following which no further grace period will be given. Many vehicles are yet to get their number plates replaced, and while the owners of some of them might just be procrastinating, there are a number of vehicles whose road permits have not been renewed since they need to pay heavy fines for traffic rule breaches.
