DOHA: A local distributor of a US-patented oil additive, which claims to cut electricity consumption by air-conditioners by up to 35 percent, is likely to join hands with Kahramaa’s Tarsheed energy conservation initiative.
Tarsheed is a national campaign for the efficient use of water and electricity launched by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).
Under the programme, Tarsheed has set up targets to bring down per capita consumption of electricity and water by 20 percent and 35 percent respectively, over five years. The product is expected to play a significant role in reducing the use of electricity by air-conditioning systems which consumes more than two-third of electricity.
The innovative solution named ‘Thermonomics, which was launched in Qatar on Saturday by Central Gulf (local partner), is a derivative of fossil fuel. The solution is injected into the compressor of an air-conditioner. It improves the efficiency of cooling machines by removing all the build-up oil with a simple one-time application of the restorative agent specially engineered for this purpose by a Dupont surface chemist.
The product has a wide range of applications, such as in air-condition units, chillers, coolers, freezers, cars, buses and refrigerated containers.
“This is a new US-patented product we are launching here today for improving air-conditioning performance, which enables to save energy and electricity bill by up to 35 percent,” said Nayef Shaban, Managing Director of Central Gulf.
Shaban said: “We visited Kahramaa officials in the past and are negotiating with Tarsheed to achieve the target of reducing the consumption of electricity by working together. Mr Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, president of Kahramaa,  had asked us to meet again after the launch of the product in Qatar.”  He said: “Since the product is already here, we are expecting to meet the officials concerned next week.”
He said that after just a few years, cooling systems start to rapidly lose their efficiency, costing their end users even more money because the internal parts of an air conditioning unit, especially the condenser and evaporator, are designed to transfer heat.
Speaking to The Peninsula on the sidelines of the launching event of Thermonomics, he added: “In addition to this patented technology, we also provide Italian solar-powered solutions for air-conditioning, lighting, and other, which can also help reduce the use of non-renewable energy and protect the environment.”
The company is initially planning to offer free services to its prospective customers to prove the efficiency and advantages of using the product.
Thermonomics, according to Shaban, has been invented by the US-based Thermo Holding after 20 years of extensive research. The product is popular in the American markets, especially in South America and many countries in the Middle East, such as Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
“We have an office in Commercial Plaza and planning to expand our team in a big way to provide our products and services, including the injection of this and other maintenance services to both residential and commercial buildings,” he said.
Shaban said the product would be of more useful in this region as the use of air-conditioning and refrigeration system is very extensive, that accounts for over 70 percent of the monthly electric bills.
