Ex-minister warns of chaos over presidential election

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s former law minister Senator Babar Awan said that holding presidential election in the absence of 46 lawmakers would result into constitutional chaos and will be a stigma on the election for the extremely distinguished constitutional office.

“The president shall be the head of the state and shall represent the unity of the republic,” said Awan.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced to hold election for the office of the president on August 6.

Incumbent President Asif Ali Zardari is completing his five-year term on September 9.

The ECP has already announced to hold by-polls of around 46 seats of the National Assembly and provincial assemblies on August 22.

Asked, Babar Awan said the electoral college for the election of the president is short by 46 members.

There is no enabling provision in the constitution or the rules or procedures which can deal with the absence of such a large number of members of the assemblies in the presidential election, he added.
