A transformer weighing 163,000kgs being discharged at Hamad Port
Hamad Port, Qatar’s gateway to world trade, reached another milestone as it discharged a transformer weighing 163,000 kilograms which was the heaviest break-bulk unit ever handled in the port.
“QTerminals has achieved another significant milestone, successfully discharging the heaviest breakbulk unit ever handled in Hamad Port – a transformer weighing 163,000 kgs,” said QTerminals on its official twitter account, yesterday.
QTerminals is a terminal operating company jointly established by Mwani Qatar and Milaha to provide container, general cargo, RORO, livestock and offshore supply services in Phase 1 of Hamad Port.
“Congratulations to the ops team @q_terminals for a safe and successful discharge of this break bulk unit - all 163,000 kgs of it!,” tweeted Neville Bissett, CEO of QTerminals. Hamad Ports has accomplished many feats during this year, despite challenging situation created by the COVID-19 outbreak. On May 25, QTerminals announced that it had successfully handled an Ship To Ship (STS) cargo operation at its Hamad Port General Cargo Terminal for the first time since the beginning of operations at the port.
Similarly, one of the largest offshore vessels had berthed at Hamad Port General Cargo Terminal berth on May 7 this year.
A month earlier on April 29, QTerminals had welcomed the CMA CGM vessel MV APL Temasek at Hamad Port. The vessel had a length overall (LOA) of 397.88 metres, a container capacity of 17,292 TEUs and was the longest and the highest container capacity vessel ever to call at Hamad Port. In April, Hamad Port accomplished another feat as it handled container volume of over 5 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) since the start of operations.
All equipment used at the Container Terminal-2 at Hamad Port are environmentally friendly and low in carbon emissions.
Hamad Port continues to witness growth in cargo handling. With every passing month and year, Hamad Port’s handling of movement of vessels and cargo is increasing and the port is expanding its container terminal base. The Port holds a major share in the total cargo handling in Qatar. The port handled 129,640 TEUs containers and 103,947 break-bulk cargo in June 2021. It also handled 5,811 units of vehicles during the month. Total 137 vessels had docked at the port last month.
The Port registered an increase in vessels’ arrival and cargo handling in 2020 which indicates port’s growing importance in regional trade. Hamad Port, in 2020, handled over 1.4 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) containers and received 1,600 vessels.
According to figures released by QTerminals, the Port handled 1.4 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units containers; 304, 481 tonnes of bulk cargo; 1,196,559 tonnes of general cargo; 59,443 vehicles; and 264,164 heads of livestock last year.
Hamad Port is helping in diversifying country’s economy. Along with general cargo traffic, the port handles a variety of specialist imports including livestock, automobiles, and bulk grain.
Hamad Port has a uniquely-designed port control tower at a height of 110 metres, a customs inspection area for rapid cargo clearance, a ship inspection platform and multiple maritime facilities, in addition to other utilities such as storage units, mosques, rest areas, medical clinics and the offices required for port operation.
