Sharif to visit US for a week

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will make a week-long visit to the US from Monday, the Foreign Ministry said yesterday. Spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said Sharif would take part in the UN General Assembly sessions and meet with many prime ministers,  including India’s Manmohan Singh, on the sidelines. He could also bring up the issue of US drone attacks during the session. 

Drunk PIA pilot held in UK  

LONDON: A pilot believed to be working for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has been arrested at a British airport on suspicion of being drunk while in charge of a plane, West Yorkshire Police said yesterday. Officers were called on Wednesday evening to the airport serving the northern cities of Leeds and Bradford where they arrested the 54-year-old from Pakistan. The exact circumstances of the arrest were not clear, although the pilot was not thought to be flying at the time. “At about 10pm police were called to Leeds Bradford International Airport where they arrested an airline pilot on suspicion of carrying out an activity ancillary to an aviation function while impaired by drink,” police said. PIA did not comment, while a spokeswoman for the airport said: “We are aware of the incident but the matter is being dealt with by police.” 

Cross border firing protested   

Islamabad: Pakistan has lodged a protest against cross-border firing by Afghan Border Police. The Afghan charge d’affaires was summoned to the Foreign Office and a protest was lodged over “indiscriminate” firing by the Afghan Border Police near village Godwana in Zhob district, Dunya News said. The firing resulted in the deaths of six Pakistanis. Kabul  was asked to probe the incident, adhere to border coordination and cooperation mechanisms and prevent such incidents which are detrimental to friendly relations.

1.5m people  hit by floods  

Islamabad: Floods triggered by heavy rains in Pakistan have affected around 1.5 million people, the National Disaster Management said yesterday. Floods have destroyed crops over about 1.46m acres and damaged more than 79,000 homes totally or partially, a  report said. Agencies
