DOHA: Qatar’s women’s national team coach Monika Staab, has been nominated for the 2014 German Football Ambassador award, it was announced yesterday.
The nomination certificate was given at the Aspire4Sport on the final day of the four-day event by Mansoor Al Ansari, Director of National Teams Committee and Hani Balan, Qatar Football Association (QFA) Executive Committee Member.
The other nominees announced are Winfried Schäfer (national trainer of Jamaica) and Klaus Stärk (technical director of Namibia).
Staab, along with the other two nominees were awarded prize money to support social football projects.
The Qatar coach chose to support the UN (United Nations) recognised Layan campaign with her prize money.
Layan Campaign was set up by a group of great youths from the Gulf in order to provide help and assistance to Syrian refugees in north Lebanon. The campaign was named after a Syrian girl ‘Layan’, a baby who did not exceed seven months old and was suffering from heart disease leading to the deterioration of her health.
The coach donated the prize money to Lekhwiya player Adel Lamy who is of the organisers that contributes greatly to the Layan Campaign.
Staab, who has already taught football in more than 60 countries and supports mainly women’s and youth football, was delighted with the nomination. The German said: ‘‘I am happy to receive the nomination, because it stresses the important aspects of my work. I am also delighted that Qatar enthusiastically wants to promote women’s sport.”
The winner of the award will be announced by jury members including Rainer Holzschuh, Uwe Seeler, Lutz Pfannenstiel and Doris Fitschen on May 5, 2014. THE PENINSULA
