MES Indian School conducts student parliament elections

The MES Indian School, Abu Hamour Branch (MESIS) conducted its maiden student parliament elections for the posts of Head Boy, Head Girl, Assistant Head Boy, Assistant Head Girl, Sports Captain, Arts Secretary and Magazine Editor for the academic year 2021- 2022. The election was announced on May 3, 2021.

The Head Boy and Head Girl titles were reserved for Grade VIII students whereas the Assistant Head Boy and Assistant Head Girl were reserved for grade VII students

Students of Grades VI to VIII were eligible for the posts of Arts Secretary, Sports Captain and Magazine Editor. Nomination forms for the candidates were sent via email requests and had to be submitted by 5th May 2021. After scrutiny, 23 nominations were accepted and six were rejected.

On the next day, the final list of contesting candidates along with their election symbols was published. The class teachers posted digital posters prepared by the candidates in their respective class groups.

All contesting candidates virtually met their voters in ‘Meet the Candidate Programme’ via Zoom and declared their manifesto.

All the candidates introduced themselves and spoke eloquently in their discrete persuasive speeches.

The online voting was held on May 11. Class teachers circulated clear instructions on the method of voting and Google form links for voting were forwarded to all the class WhatsApp groups.

Counting of votes was held on the same day at 3.00pm live on Zoom. School Principal, Dr. Haneef announced the official results.

The school parliament election provided an opportunity for all students to involve in school governance and decision making through a group of democratically elected students who represent the views of all students at the school, gave education regarding the function of democracy and understand the process of the parliamentary system of the government.

The first elected parliament members of MESIS are: Joseph Mathew Jinoy, Head Boy; Falaqul Thahira, Head Girl; Muhammed Izyan, Assistant Head Boy; Laiqa Maryam, Assistant Head Girl; Afaaf Shiyas, Sports Captain; Fathima Mayaza, Student Editor and Lakshmi Priya, Arts Secretary.

The school management and the staff members expressed their gratitude to the parents for their unflinching support and cooperation to make the school parliament election a grand success.

The students along with the parents enjoyed the entire process of a real democratic election. Ultimately the student parliament election became a meaningful learning activity for the students, opined the Management Committee President Abdul Karim
