Kinshasa, DR Congo: The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) announced that the number of confirmed Ebola cases has risen to 956, including 247 deaths, as the outbreak continues and the country's health sector faces increasing pressure.
The Ministry of Health of the DRC stated in a press release that the number of confirmed cases has reached 956, while the death toll has climbed to 247.
This comes after the World Health Organization confirmed on Friday that 75 healthcare workers have been infected with the virus, and 17 have died since the start of the current outbreak.
Congolese Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba announced on Saturday that 933 confirmed cases and 245 deaths had been recorded, before the ministry revealed the increased figures in its latest update.
The virus is believed to have started spreading months before Congolese authorities officially announced the first cases on May 15, which exposed a number of medical personnel to the risk of infection before the outbreak was discovered, at a time when the health sector is facing a severe shortage of basic protective equipment, including gloves and masks.
