Doha: The Gulf countries are working in collaboration with the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA-ROLI) to launch a ‘model’ guide on legal education for the region.

Legal professionals from various sectors in Qatar gathered to discuss strategies for the development of the legal profession in Qatar during a conference organised by the Qatar University College of Law (QU-LAWC) in conjunction with the ABA-ROLI here yesterday.

The conference, held on the sidelines of ‘building a stronger legal profession in Qatar’, was inaugurated by the Minister of Justice, H E Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim. “This conference aims to contribute to strengthening the rule of law in the country,” the minister said, while lauding the role of lawyers in Qatar.

While stressing the need for training of lawyers and developing moral ethics in the country, Dr Hassaan Okour, Dean of the QU College of Law, said that because Qatar was going through rapid developments, the role of lawyers had increased manifold.

“I hope this conference will be the first of its kind that would help restructure the legal profession in Qatar,” Dr Akkur said, adding that lawyers face the challenge of meeting the requirements of state and the private sector. The opening ceremony was attended by Dr Sheikha Al Misnad, President of QU, along with law professors, lawyers from US as well as other Arab countries.
