DOHA: Nakilat’s ship repair joint venture Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (N-KOM)has won the Ship Repair Innovation Award at the Seatrade Maritime Awards Middle East, Indian Subcontinent & Africa 2015. N-KOM’s Chief Executive Officer Chandru Rajwani received the award at the ceremony held in Dubai, which was attended by senior executives from across the maritime industry.
The award is in recognition of the shipyard’s successful undertaking of the world’s first M-type Gas Injection (ME-GI) retrofit project, which involved modifying a Nakilat owned Q-MAX vessel, Rasheeda, to run on LNG as an alternative to marine diesel fuel.
Abdullah Al Sulaiti, Nakilat MD, said: “The successful completion of the ME-GI project by N-KOMin Erhama bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard is yet another milestone in Qatar’s standing. This award not only highlights the shipyard’s prowess at handling complex repair profiles but more importantly, its drive to contribute to the sustainable development of the maritime industry in Qatar while allowing a cleaner fuel technology with significant reduction in environmental emissions and cleaner burning engines.
Additional benefits of the project include the potential to increase mean time between maintenance, provide flexibility of fuel supply to react to market changes and reduced bunkering activities which in turn will offer operations and marine risk reduction.
