DOHA: Qatar is working to implement the latest technology in its upcoming and existing projects that will considerably reduce emissions, said the Minister of Environment
H E Ahmed Amer Mohamed Al Humaidi in Warsaw yesterday.
The Minister, who is heading the delegation at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) conference, also stressed Qatar’s commitment to address the issues related to global impact of climate change.
“Building from the historic success of the Doha Climate Gateway under the Presidency of H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah during COP18/CMP8 in Qatar, the nation continues to take an active role in this critical global issue,” said the Minister.
He added, “we are required to deal with the impacts of global climate change from a holistic perspective that takes into account all the causes, and we have to be far-sighted and address this phenomenon in the present and think about tomorrow to meet its challenges, to ensure a better life for future generations”.
He also talked about the rehabilitation of combustion turbines in existing plants which were commissioned before 2005 with modern technology to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
The Minister later met with Vice-President and head of department of environment of Iran Massoumeh Ebtekar and discussed mutual issues related to climate change.
Qatar that has been the front-runner of the climate change issues was the host of the last year’s UNFCCC conference showed a great initiative by uniting the member states of the GCC during the conference in Warsaw and by giving a one voice to the common related issues. The delegation of Saudi Arabia especially welcomes this move.
On the sidelines of the conference a group of Arab NGO’s held a meeting and discussed the possibilities of forming a network of NGO’s across the Arab world to give a common platform to issues related to the Arab world. Members of NGO’s from Lebanon, Sudan, Morocco and Tunisia attended the meeting.
