Dhaka: At least five people, including a child, were killed and nearly 100 injured after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Narsingdi, east of the capital Dhaka.
Authorities reported damage to buildings across several areas, including the capital, while tremors were felt in neighboring eastern Indian states. No major damage has been reported in India so far.
Interim Prime Minister Mohammad Yunus said injuries were recorded among university students in Dhaka, factory workers in Gazipur, and residents of Narsingdi, the quake’s epicenter.
He added that the government is closely monitoring the situation and has ordered intensified rescue operations.
Police confirmed three deaths due to a collapsed wall of a six-story building, while Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum stated that several victims from Narsingdi remain in critical condition.
