DOHA: Access to Industrial Area and surrounding localities from different parts of the city has been made easier and faster with the full opening of the long-awaited East Industrial Street.
The 3km road links Industrial Area with Al Rayyan, Al Gharafa and the northern parts of the city and also provides easier access to Mesaimeer, Abu Hamour and Al Wakra from these areas.
Motorists heading from Al Rayyan towards Industrial Area or Mesaimeer crossing the intersection near the zoo can now enjoy a smooth drive. The area had been experiencing heavy traffic jams for several months due to the ongoing road works.
The new upgraded road has dedicated lanes for bicycles and pedestrians providing safe access to the Industrial Area streets.
The East Industrial Street project included upgrading of the road south of Industrial Interchange to the existing roundabout at the East Industrial Street junction, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) said yesterday.
The main road is 3km-long and comprises a six-lane divided carriageway, with three lanes in each direction, in addition to a two-lane service road network with a total length of 6km.
The project includes two new multi-level interchanges at intersections with Street 10 and Street 23, pedestrian and cycle pathways on both sides of the road, and four pedestrian crossings, signals on cross roads and ramps at the intersections. “The driving time from one end of the project to the other end after opening the road is only five minutes at the designated speed,” said Ashghal.
The new interchanges on the East Industrial Street, designed according to the highest safety standards, ensures free flow of traffic and reduced waiting time for motorists.
The new and improved pedestrian and bicycle pathways will improve accessibility to the Industrial Area, and reduce reliance on vehicles, especially for those living and working close to the area.
Pedestrian crossings will also help people access the shops on the west side of the East Industrial Street. The area houses a major portion of the Barwa Commercial Avenue, including the recently opened exclusive Chinese market, Dragon Mart.
The East Industrial Street project is part of Ashghal’s Expressway Programme. Main construction works have already been completed while work on pavements, some of the service road and pedestrian and cycle pathways are currently under way without obstructing traffic flow, said Ashghal.
The project also includes upgrading the electrical and water network, installing the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and improving the street lighting and traffic light systems.
“The importance of the East Industrial Street project is that it will serve vehicles and heavy trucks entering the Industrial Area by creating a vital ring road which links to Al Furousiya, Al Gharrafa, and AlKhafji Streets projects,” said Ashghal.
