MUSCAT: The extraordinary meeting of the council of undersecretaries and heads of statistics agencies and departments of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) kicked off on Tuesday in Muscat, hosted by Oman's National Center for Statistics and Information.
The two-day meeting, chaired by Bahrain's Central Informatics Organization (CIO) President Dr. Mohammad Ahmad Al-Amer, will discuss the approval of the constituent budget of the GCC Statistical Center, which will be based in Oman.
This extraordinary meeting comes prior to GCC leaders' approval of the center at the previous GCC summit, which was held in Bahrain last December.
The establishment of the GCC Statistical Center comes within a framework of the keenness and interest of the GCC states to achieve statistical cooperation between the member states to contribute to the strengthening of the statistical activities and the development of database and comparative statistical information, that contribute to the service and support of the joint resolutions, plans and programs.
The center will be established also to be an effective channel for information flow and statistical data between the GCC countries besides its contribution and role in raising the efficiency of the national statistical agencies and promoting awareness of the importance and value of statistical work.
