QatarEnergy confirms 13 dead, 66 injured in Ras Laffan Industrial City incident

Doha, Qatar: QatarEnergy held a press conference today, June 22, 2026, in Doha following the operational incident which caused the explosion and fire at the Barzan local gas supply facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City on the evening hours of Sunday, June 21, 2026. 

Speaking at a press conference in Doha on Monday, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, and the President and CEO of QatarEnergy HE Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said that the incident occurred at around 10:30pm on Sunday night, June 21, 2026, and stressed that it was an accident, not an act of sabotage or any hostile activity.

The fire was swiftly and fully extinguished by QatarEnergy Emergency Response Team and the country's Civil Defence. 

QatarEnergy also confirmed the death of 13 individuals - of Indian and Pakistani nationalities. Meanwhile, 66 people have been reported injured and are receiving medical treatment, none of whom are in life-threatening condition. 

During the press conference, His Excellency also stated that the Barzan plant production was shut since December 2025 due to urgent maintenance requirement and was first restarted two days ago. 

He further indicated that the incident will not affect exports, explaining that the affected project is a local project and is not related to export capabilities. He also confirmed the state’s ability to cover its energy needs and that there are no concerns in this regard.
