KABUL: Taliban militants attacked a checkpoint in southern Afghanistan, killing five policemen, officials said Friday.

"The incident took place Thursday night in the Gereshk district," said Mahmoud Shah, an official in Helmand province.

An officer at the checkpoint likely helped the militants, he said.

"One of the policemen guarding the post has fled the area taking the weapons."

Separately, a member of the NATO-led international troops died "as a result of a non-battle injury in eastern Afghanistan," the military said in a statement, without elaborating, dpa reported. (QNA)
