LUANDA: Angolan police detained three journalists who interviewed organisers of a banned anti-government protest in the oil-rich nation’s capital Luanda, sources said yesterday.
Journalist and activist Rafael Marques and two colleagues were held on Friday while interviewing seven youths who were released after their detention during the protest the day before, he told AFP. “Several police vehicles surrounded us,” said Marques. “Beside the two journalists who were with me, the police also detained the seven youths who the court had just released, without giving a reason,” he said.
Marques also claimed he had been assaulted.
The journalists were released five hours later, but the youths remained in custody, he said.
No one was available to comment for the police. The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said one of the reporters detained on Friday was a reporter for Voice of America. AFP
