DOHA: In a bid to support the Qatar Animal Welfare Society (QAWS) to relocate soon many animal lovers raised funds during the weekend.
They contributed to help the shelter to continue rescuing and provide a home for stray animals as the deadline for them to move is nearing.
The oldest and largest animal welfare shelter in Qatar stopped accepting stray animals in July after 10 years of service as they failed to find an alternative location.
An eviction notice was issued to QAWS in December 2012. QAWS negotiated to stay at the current location until September 30, but is being punished for their overstaying with a 70 percent increment in rent since July.
Hakuna Matata - Happy Pets, a business specialised in home made pets’ treats and food organsied an event to raise funds during the weekend to support QAWS.
All proceeds from Hakuna Matata treats sales during the two days will be given to QAWS relocation and to a second chance rescue. Faten Ali Manager at Hakuna Matata and Aziz Loukasah organized the event to collect QR7,000 to support QAWS.
“Around 60 people bought treats. We have achieved the target and the proceeds will be given to QAWS to find an alternative location,” said Loukasah. “We want to see the work by QAWS to continue so stray animals will have a home,” he added.
QAWS started in 2003 by a group of animal lovers based in Doha on the need to rescue and shelter animals.
The current shelter was in west of Doha. The QAWS was in search for a 10,000 sq m area to continue their work, to house hundreds of animals, including stray dogs and cats to birds, goats and even bulls, provide these animals veterinary services, conduct educational programmes and find homes to adopt animals. QAWS is run by volunteers and donations.
