DOHA: Motorists should learn to live with traffic jams until infrastructure development projects are over, says the Traffic Department.
“You need to be patient… Traffic snarls are basically due to the closure of roads and diversions caused by development projects,” said Brigadier Mohamed Saad Al Kharji(pictured) . Traffic jams need long-term solutions. Once the mega public transport projects are completed, the situation would improve.
About current restrictions on issuing driving licences to certain categories of foreign workers, Al Kharji said that was a temporary solution.
Once the development projects are over, the restrictions would be lifted, he told local Arabic daily Al Raya in an interview published yesterday.
Talking of complaints from motorists about delays in traffic policemen arriving on accident spots, he said his department was hiring more staff to tackle the problem.
“They will be available in different areas, so there won’t be delays.” The delays are mainly caused by policemen taking time to reach accident spots due to road closures and diversions.
He said his department was set to launch a fresh campaign against dangerous driving.
By the end of the year, the department plans to hold an auction of easy-to-remember vehicle number plates, he said.
“We are learning from the experience of Ooredoo in this regard.”
The traffic chief said the monitoring of traffic using the helicopters had proved quite useful. “Based on aerial monitoring, we have noticed that we need to provide an easy access to Frig Nasser area bypassing the Ramada traffic signals intersection.”
