DOHA: As part of efforts to preserve Qatari and Arab tradition and heritage, Katara has released a book, Carrier Pigeons in Katara.
It was issued by the Research and Studies Department following a proposal by researcher Ali Yusef Al Kuwari and prepared in collaboration with Dr Ayman Nabih Saadallah to be a reference for all researchers and those interested in Qatari heritage.
The book is expected to fill the gap in the area as there is scarcity of such reference in Arabic library and there are very few research on heritage and folklore of Qatar and the Gulf.
Katara General Manager, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, said the book comes within the strategy of Katara to revive Qatari heritage.
Arabs in general used pigeons to send messages. They were the first to realise the importance of pigeons and gathered information about their species.
They raised and took care of pigeons which were found to be fast, efficient and capable of travelling long distances, he said.
Dr Al Sulaiti said the five pigeon towers at Katara have been the hallmark of traditional architecture to enhance everything relevant to culture and identity of Qataris and Arabs.
The book is part of efforts to maintain Qatari culture and heritage which also includes taking care of pigeons, breeding falcons and traditional fishing, among others, he said.
To show the importance of the carrier pigeon and the need to preserve it, Katara recently imported 28 pigeons from abroad. The 14 pairs are the finest breed known for intelligence, speed and rarity.
The 214-page book includes an introduction and two chapters. It discusses the historical background of carrier pigeons and highlights their importance, types and classifications, stages of development, anatomy and physiology, methods of nutrition, colours and dwellings.
It also highlights the meaning of carrier pigeon in Arabic language, pigeon towers, advantages and characteristics, their role as mail courier, how they can be trained and racing pigeons as a sport.
