New York: Japan has submitted a draft resolution to a United Nations disarmament committee calling for the total abolition of nuclear weapons.
The draft calls attention to the inhumane damage wrought by nuclear weapons, and urges that nuclear powers be more transparent in their disarmament efforts, Japan's (NHK WORLD) website reported.
It also invites world leaders to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, noting that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of the two cities.
Japan has submitted the draft resolution for 22 years in a row.
Last year, its resolution was adopted with the support of 170 countries.
However, nuclear and non-nuclear powers failed to adopt an outcome document at the review conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty earlier this year.
Austria and about other 40 non-nuclear powers have jointly submitted a draft resolution to the UN that goes further than Japan's. It calls for a treaty banning nuclear weapons.
