DOHA: A unique campaign is being launched targeting groups of children who will be taught to respect and appreciate workers who provide essential services to society like construction workers, janitors, and taxi drivers, among others.

The Childhood Cultural Center at Katara will tomorrow launch the innovative drive. The campaign will educate children how to respect and appreciate the work of people who are providing essential services to the community.

Normally the contribution of these segments of the population to society being crucial goes unrecognised.

During the campaign, that will run from tomorrow until March 26 next year, children associated with the Center will visit select places in Doha and its outskirts and honour people from the said segments. The programme titled Taqdeer (Appreciation) is being launched in collaboration with the cultural and social committee at Al Khor Sports Club.

Those who will receive accolades from children during the campaign include public cleaning workers, taxi drivers, construction workers, salesmen in malls and other commercial centres, markets, hotels and petrol stations, vendors selling fruits vegetables at the central market and security personnel.

Traffic police personnel, fire fighters, nurses, Imams (in mosques), teachers of the Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs, and people working in the Souq Waqif will also be honoured during the campaign.

Children will hand over gifts to select groups of people from these segments in recognition of their contribution to society, it was disclosed at a press conference at Katara yesterday.

Hind Abdul Rahman Al Muftah, director of the Center said “the campaign aims to honour groups of workers in specific jobs who are not being given attention and appreciation for their achievements and contributions to the society and our daily life.” A major objective of the campaign is to teach children how to respect others through practical programmes.

“This is a good initiative. We will distribute 1,000 gifts to be handed over by students to people from the above segments as a moral support to them,” said Ghanim Al Mohannadi of the Al Khor Sports Club.

Hassa Al Attiyah, coordinator of the campaign said the activities will begin at the Childhood Cultural Center at Katara and the children will then visit various places, as per a plan, accompanied by their trainers and event coordinators.

Abdul Hamid Al Mulla, director of public relations and communication at the Center said there is a plan to launch another campaign for children to teach them how to choose a future career. The campaign titled “My dream carrier” will target children aged six to 12 years.
