DOHA: The Paediatric emergency units have reported a surge in the number of children seeking treatment for seasonal illnesses, due to unstable weather conditions prevailing over the country.

Over 15,000 children sought treatment at these facilities over the past one week, with an average 2,000 visitors daily,a local Arabic daily reported yesterday. Since last week, the country has been experiencing a sudden change in weather conditions, with intermittent rains, dust storms and a gradual dip in temperature.

The Pediatric Emergency at Al Sadd received about 9,500 visitors over the past one week. The satellite units in Al Rayyan and Airport area saw about 4,000 and 2,200 visitors, respectively.

Of these, 45 cases were transferred to the Hamad General Hospital (HGH) for further check up and treatment, said the daily, quoting a source.

Most cases were related to seasonal influenza and respiratory problems, resulting from adverse weather conditions.

Many children are accompanied with the entire family leading to crowding in the facilities. The emergency units have introduced a triaging system to handle the huge rush, which is expected to continue until the weather returns to normal.

All visitors would undergo a preliminary check up to assess the seriousness of their condition. If they required immediate consultation and treatment, they will be transferred to a doctor. Otherwise they will be asked to wait in queue until their turn comes. Normally, during the rush days, a non-emergency case may have to wait for 30 to 40 minutes, said the daily.
