Draft law on Independent schools ready

DOHA: A draft law that seeks to regulate different aspects of Independent schools, including the pay and perks of school operators, is ready and might soon be referred to the authorities for necessary approvals.
The draft, once ratified and made into a law and implemented, could see the basic salaries of operators and teachers of Independent schools unified.
Currently, there are disparities in the pay packages of Independent school operators and teachers and they vary from one school to another.
The Supreme Education Council, the regulator of schools, has prepared the draft of the law and it is ready to be referred to the State Cabinet, Al Sharq reported yesterday, quoting sources at the Council.
The daily said some Independent school operators had been demanding upward revision in their pay scales and wanted the basic salary to go up to a whopping QR70,000 a month.
The law, once put in force after the necessary approval process, may likely allow that privilege to the operators, the daily said.
At present, the basic salary of Independent school operators ranges from QR32,000 to QR48,000 a month.
As for teachers, who are divided into seven grades according to their qualifications and experience, the basic salary varies from QR14,400 to QR19,200 (for the lowest grade).
An Independent school teacher in the top grade is entitled to a basic salary of QR40,000 to QR48,000 monthly. There are allowances besides this salary.
While the draft of the new law seeks to unify the basic salaries of teachers and operators across Independent Schools, the managements of these schools would be free to fix allowances for  teachers and operators on their own.
