DOHA: Local design student Mona Al Sulaiti was awarded a Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar) scholarship sponsored by Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee (Q22) after winning the first stage of ‘Doha Skyline Project 2012’ organised by Q22.
Lolwa Al Mohannadi and Noora Al Melhim were awarded runner-up certificates by Q22 Brand Guardian, Carmen Smith, during the awards ceremony at VCUQatar.
VCUQatar students were tasked with creating their own artistic interpretations of Doha’s skyline in the form of their choosing – sketching, painting, illustration. The submissions then were evaluated by Q22’s brand department and Lambie Nairn London, Q22’s Brand Agency, for compatibility with Q22 brand identity and uniqueness.
The Doha skyline project is the first part of a long-term community engagement programme between Q22 and VCUQatar, to include and integrate work of local students into Q22’s brand identity, which will be used at events and in official publications globally.
Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee Communications and Marketing Director, Nasser Al Khater, said: “This project is an important part of our community outreach and ties in with our aim of ensuring that the delivery of a successful 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is achieved through utilising talented and creative young individuals from the local population.”
“I would like to congratulate Mona on winning the first stage of the competition and look forward to seeing her work being integrated into our communications output. Our plan is to hold an annual exhibition of all student work where the public in Qatar can visit and see how the students’ designs have been incorporated into our communications,” Al Khater added.
The Dean of VCUQatar, Allyson Vanstone, said: “Our engagement programme with Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee is a fantastic opportunity for our students. They have the opportunity to contribute to Q22’s brand identity and play a significant role is shaping Qatar’s design industry.”
The programme will continue in the coming semesters with projects focusing on calligraphy, typography and Qatar landmarks.
The long-term aim of the programme is for Q22 to work closely with VCUQatar students in order to capture Qatar’s progress creatively in the build-up to hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Peninsula
