Doha: Continuing its tradition of supporting all sports in Qatar, Ooredoo was yesterday named the official sponsor of 2015 Qatar Total Open.
Qatar Total Open, launched in 2001, is an annual women’s tennis tournament that attracts top players from around the world to compete for the title and $731,000 prize. Last year, the tournament saw a record number of fans visit the tournament, with superstars, including Venus Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska, taking to centre court.
This year, the tournament will host 32 players in singles and 16 doubles teams over six days. It will feature five players ranked in the top 10 and 14 in the top 20, and four current or former Grand Slam winners.
Defending champion and world No. 3 Simona Halep of Romania heads the field with current Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova set to be the second seed at No. 4 in the world. Former No. 1 Venus will return to Qatar after reaching a disappointing second round in last year’s tournament.
Saad Al Mohannadi, Tournament Director, said: “QTF is pleased with the players entered for the tournament. It is a quality field and we are happy to have our defending champion Halep returning.”
Mustafa Al Qatami, Director, Branding and Corporate Communications, Ooredoo, said: “Supporting sports and especially sports for women is a major initiative of Ooredoo. We believe in championing women and are pleased to be able to give the young women of Qatar the opportunity to watch and be inspired by some of the most talented players in the world.”
Ooredoo will provide telecom infrastructure at Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex to ensure media companies from around the world can seamlessly report on the event, and visitors can access 3G and 4G services on Ooredoo’s bigger and faster network. The tournament will be held from February 23 to 28.
Tickets are available at City Center, Landmark, Lagoona, Villaggio, Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex and on www.qatartennis.org
