Doha: Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD) announced that Bard Al Ajouz days start at the end of February and last till March beginning.
Bard Al Ajouz - Old woman's cold - is a local term given to the last of the cold waves at the end of the winter season that leads to a sudden drop in temperatures after they have risen significantly, usually late in February lasting until first week of March.
The name comes from a folklore about an old woman, who was in a hurry to shear her sheep, confident that the winter was over, and suddenly the cold northern wind blew and the sheep died.
A significant drop in temperature is expected from Thursday evening, especially the minimums ranging between 12-19 °C. reaching less than that in open areas of the country and the maximum temperature is likely between 20-26 °C.
QMD also said in another post on Twitter that chances of scattered rain will continue at intermittent periods and of variable intensity until Thursday night, February 25, 2021. It may turn thundery in some areas accompanied by sudden strong winds.
Fresh Northwesterly winds are expected from Thursday midday and continue during the weekend ranging between 12-22 KT with gusts reaching 28 KT sometimes inshore and offshore.
