New Delhi: Six activists of the SFI were arrested yesterday for heckling West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and state Finance Minister Amit Mitra here on April 9, a Delhi Police officer said.
The arrested activists include a general secretary of the Students Federation of India, the students’ wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM).
“The SFI’s general secretary, Rita Brathogosh Banerjee, two women activists Anju Jha and Asha Sharma, besides Suman, Nathu Prasad and B S Aggarwal were arrested in connection with the case,” said an officer.
They were booked under the sections of rioting, obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions, assault to deter public servant from discharge of his duty, and voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty, the police officer said.
Coast Guard ship commissioned
Kolkata: Indian Coast Guard Ship Rajdoot, designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers here, was commissioned by Controller General of Defence Accounts Arunava Dutt at a function here yesterday.
ICGS Rajdoot, the sixth in the series of eight inshore patrol vessels (IPVs) displaces 300 tons and can achieve a maximum speed of 34 knots. It is capable of several tasks including surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and medical evacuation.
Inspector General K C Pande, Commander, Coast Guard Region (Northeast), was among officials present at the function.
Armed forces to DNA profile soldiers
New Delhi: DNA profiles of armed forces personnel would be stored in a data bank to help in identification during operations or any other contingency from any fragment of body tissue, the Lok Sabha was informed yesterday.
Defence Minister A K Antony told the house that the Armed Forces Medical Research Committee (AFMRC) has approved a pilot project (2012-2014) titled “Development of Protocol for DNA Profiling (Identification) and Repository of Personnel of Armed Forces”.
“This pilot project is in progress at Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. The objectives of the project are to devise a protocol for collection, preservation and transportation of blood samples of the soldiers and to devise protocol for procedure for identifying service personnel from any fragment of body tissue,” Antony said.
Father flings son to death in Delhi
New Delhi: A father fatally flung his one-and-a-half year old child from the third floor balcony of a house in east Delhi after a violent quarrel with his wife, police said yesterday. The father, a casual worker, has been arrested.
According to police, Hari Om, a resident of Gujarat, had come to his in-law’s house in New Usmanpur area in east Delhi to take his wife and son back to his home.
His unwilling wife resisted and a quarrel ensued between the two. Om then flung his son from the balcony to “teach his wife a lesson”. The child was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital but died on arrival, said an officer.
